Christina Path – Historical cycle route Osnabrück-Antwerp

We follow the trail of the seventeenth-century Swedish queen Christina, who caused a stir in Europe by abdicating the throne and leaving her kingdom towards an unknown destination. She settled in the Southern Netherlands, where she secretly converted from Lutheran to Catholic. She then travelled on to Rome, where she was welcomed with pomp and circumstance by the Pope.

Frans Godfroy described this sensational journey of conversion in his book Passage naar Rome. For motorcyclists and car drivers, he reconstructed the 4000 km long route through Europe as Via Christina.

The Christina Path is derived from the fourth stage of the Via Christina. It became a beautiful long-distance cycle route of a good 500 km. For the most part it runs through the Netherlands (Osnabrück, Münster, Deventer, Apeldoorn, Amersfoort, Utrecht, Gorinchem, Breda, Baarle-Nassau, Antwerp). The route can be covered almost entirely using cycle nodes.

Unlike the Via Christina, we used the ease of navigation (particularly junctions) and attractiveness of the landscape as decisive selection arguments when designing the Christinapad. As a result, the cycle route deviates further on average from the reconstruction of Christina’s historical route. Here is specific information about this for those who want to know more.
